You may or may not know that it was my birthday on the 27th of January, I am turning a whole 47 years. Turning this age landed completely differently to turning 45, for some reason 45 shook me to the core. It became glaringly clear that this bus is moving forward whether we like it or not, that there is really no time to waste, this is not a rehearsal, moments come and moments pass, never to return nor repeat.

But, turning 47 last week did not freak me out too much, in fact I woke up with laughter and spent most of the day just beaming. Even now as I type this I am filled with joy and gratitude for life and what lies ahead, what I can personally offer to my corner of the world – which got me excited because at least I do feel that I have something to offer.

On my birthday I was reminded of a powerful story I heard of the three stages of a rain forest tree, think of those majestic amazon rain forest trees.

It is said that those trees have three major life stages that take place over 300 years.

The first 100 years of the tree is about accumulation of resources, minerals and nutrients in order for it to grow strong, wide and high to reach the sky. These 100 years, the tree is simply concerned with the self, it’s consumption, health and growth.

The second 100 years of the tree is about connections and networks – it is said that the tree, develops much strong roots, forming stronger root networks with other trees it’s age group, while assisting the new trees to strengthen as well as connecting with the roots of the older trees and focuses less on growth

The third 100 years of the tree, it is said that the tree stops the growth process completely focusing only on giving all of its resources, nutrients and minerals. It becomes the best space for animals and birds to make it a home and nesting spaces. It gives all of its root knowledge and wisdom to younger tress through the root networks. It continues to do that until the day that it literally falls. It falls only when there is nothing more to offer.

When I heard this story the first time it moved me deeply, I know we as humans do not have 300 years to live, but I believe the same concept can be applied to our short lives. We do not necessarily have to categorize it in terms of chronological time periods either.

But we can think about our lives where we are conscious of what time it is exactly and where we are in our life journey. May it is still predominately time for consumption, learning, growth, getting and receiving in your life. Or maybe you are at a stage where it’s less about what you are getting but more about connecting, networking and assisting others more. It could also perhaps be a time to serve and give all of what we have acquired and gained over the years.

Of course, it can be a combination of all three different aspects of your life, maybe at work you are serving, maybe in your family and friendships you are connecting, networking and assisting more. And maybe in the area of your health and finances you are learning, growing, consuming knowledge.

It doesn’t matter where you are, what matters is that this story of the 3 life stages of rain forest trees gives us a fresh perspective on life and my birthday last week reminded me how important it is to know what time it is in our lives.
